My Father, The Hero

The holidays are always a difficult time for me (I’ve had a pretty bad one this year), but the worst of it is January 7th, my dads birthday.

Back in the day, when we first set up our video production company, this was the logo…typical of me and dad, we were running a business, but we like to have fun too.

And, this little guy, looked exactly like dad! Honestly, it’s scary! The little projector looks like one we used to have as well. Dad left school and worked as a projectionist in one of the cinemas in Plymouth, The Drake (which is now a casino). There’s a huge ship that’s still there and dad used to clean the sails when he worked there. I still smile when I see them. While working there, he used to work with the guy I film the videos for now…such a small world.

Drake Cinema (about 1999)

I remember that cinema very well. Dad had left by the time I was old enough to remember going, but I did see a lot of movies there. I still have some posters and film trailers from when it was shut down. 🙁

Dads Film Rental Shop (about 1974)

Dad ended up opening his own cinema rental place, where you could rent films for showing, much like BlockBuster Video, before the days of video. You could rent some film, a projector and screen, wait until dark and watch something (much like Netflix, but far more complicated).

We produced our first video in July 1992. I remember having 3 Super-VHS videos all hooked up and, for some reason, we were edit the video together, then dad would write the script. Still no idea why! Eventually, we moved on to computer editing, which was soooooooo much better.

I still sell the DVDs that dad and myself made, they have dated a little, but people still seem to like them. I think it’s because we focused on the story rather than anything else, anyone can throw together a series of images, but telling a story that people want to hear, that’s the difficult bit.

Dad died of cancer 17 years ago this year, but Jan 7th is always a bit of a downer for me.

Back in the day, I would never have dreamed I would be still making videos and taking photographs for a living, I mean, I always hoped I would, but I never dreamed I would be. 🙂 I’m sure dad would approve of what I’m making though, he had the odd dodgy movie in his collection, lol.

Happy Birthday Day…you’d have loved the new Star Wars btw.
